Thin Value Betting: How to Stop Leaving Money on the Table
Most players are waiting for the nuts before they put real money in the pot. The problem is, in poker, you rarely have the nuts. If that is the only time you are willing to bet for value, you are going to spend most of your session folding your way to a small loss. The players who actually win at 1/2, 1/3, 2/5, and higher are the ones who know how to bet thin and still get called.
What Thin Value Actually Means
When you build a range for your villain, based on their profile, the betting so far, and where you are in the hand, that range is not one thing. It has nutted hands, strong hands, mediocre hands, and a thin slice of value hands that barely beat what you are representing. Thin value means targeting that thin slice on purpose, instead of only firing when you are miles ahead.
You do this because those thin value spots come up constantly. If you skip them and wait for the big hands, you are leaving money on the table every single session, and that adds up fast over a week, a month, and a year of play.
Does Thin Value Always Mean a Small Bet?
Not necessarily. This is where a lot of players get it wrong. The size of your thin value bet has nothing to do with the fact that it is thin. It has everything to do with how often your villain is going to call, and with what.
Try to imagine a river with an ace, ace, queen, jack, five, a flush possible, a straight possible, and the board paired. Your villain is never folding any pocket pair, from deuces up through kings. His calling range is wide and it is thin, but because he calls that often, you do not size down. You size up. The question is never just "is this thin." The question is what portion of his range you are targeting and how often he is going to pay you off. If he is calling wide and calling big, that is exactly when you go for a large bet with a thin value hand.
Why This Matters at the Level You Play
At most 1/2, 1/3, and 2/5 games, your villains are not thinking two levels ahead. They are not going to recognize that you are targeting their thin value range and raise you off it. A lot of the time your bet looks polarized anyway, like you either have it or you are bluffing, which makes it even harder for them to find a fold. That is exactly the environment where thin value bets thrive.
