London Poker Sessions: Set-Mining, Seat Selection, and the AI Coaching Revolution

Exposing the tactical nuances and mental discipline required to crush live low-stakes games.

I recently sat down with my friend and fellow coach, Andreas from Live Poker Guide, to dissect our recent sessions at The Vic and The Hippodrome in London. If you think winning at 1/2 or 1/3 is just about waiting for premium hands, you’re living in a delusion. Success in these games is built on a foundation of exploitative fundamentals, aggressive seat selection, and the constant refinement of your own strategy through teaching and technology.

The Teacher’s Edge: Why Instruction is Mastery

There is a massive gap between "knowing" a poker concept and "mastering" it. Most players are stuck in rote memorization—they know they should C-bet a certain board, but they don't know why. When I transitioned into coaching and developed the Vinton Poker Coaching AI, my game reached a new level. Why? Because teaching forces you to close the "neuro-gaps."

When a student probes your logic, you can no longer rely on intuition alone. You have to correlate separate pieces of information into a cohesive strategy. Whether you're using my AI tool or explaining a hand to a friend, the act of verbalizing the "why" behind every street is what separates the break-even grinders from the true crushers.

“Knowing something is one thing; explaining the why and the how opens doors that you never even imagined to exist. To master your craft, you must be willing to teach it.”

Hand Breakdown: Pocket Kings vs. The Flopped Set

During our session at The Vic, Andreas and I got involved in a high-level clash that perfectly illustrates Pot Control and Range Protection. I held Pocket Kings on the Button, and Andreas called my 3-bet from the Hijack with 88.

The flop came 8-9-J rainbow. Andreas flopped bottom set—an absolute monster—but a dangerous board for my 3-betting range. I fired a standard C-bet, and Andreas made the disciplined play to just flat-call, trapping me. The turn brought a Jack, pairing the board. I checked behind, sensing the danger. The river was a 9, double-pairing the board with Jacks and Nines.

Andreas led out for a calculated size on the river. In that moment, my Kings were effectively just a bluff-catcher. I had to ask: what bluffs does he actually have here? By the time the river double-paired, his value range was dense with full houses. I made the "knit" fold, but it was the right play. Getting value out of sets in 3-bet pots is surprisingly difficult because the board runouts often "counterfeit" the lower sets or scare off the overpairs.

The Discipline of Seat Selection

One of the most telling moments of the session wasn't a hand at all—it was when Andreas decided to change tables. Most recreational players sit down and stay put, even if a maniac is sitting to their direct left. Andreas recognized that the seat to his left was a nightmare, preventing him from isolating the passive players to his right.

He prioritized his win rate over the social comfort of sitting with a friend. This is the Delusion Killer mindset. You are at the table to execute a strategy, not to be comfortable. If the seats aren't right, you move. If the table is nitty and tight, you find a new one. Seat selection is the most underrated skill in live poker.

Assassin Notes

  • Teach to Learn: Verbalizing your strategy is the fastest way to identify your own logical inconsistencies.
  • Respect the Double-Pair: On double-paired boards, overpairs lose massive value. Don't go broke with one pair when the board is screaming "Full House."
  • Aggressive Seat Selection: If you have an aggressive 3-better on your left, your win rate is being strangled. Move immediately.
  • Structure Over Chaos: Use tools like the Vinton AI to give your study sessions a logical progression instead of watching random YouTube clips.
